Transforming Medicaid: A Blueprint for Equitable Care

Today, more than 50 years after its creation, Medicaid has become an accepted element of the American social contract which promises a healthcare system that works for all Americans, not just the privileged few. This critical safety-net program has stimulated the economy and improved access to care for marginalized communities. However, there’s still a long way to go and many solutions to explore as we continue to ensure equitable care for all.

That’s the focus of “Transforming Medicaid: A Blueprint for Equitable Care,” a new book from Waymark co-founder and Head of Clinical Sanjay Basu. This free, publicly-available resource offers data- and science-backed recommendations for long-term solutions to Medicaid’s most pressing challenges, including:

  • Addressing the underlying drivers of healthcare costs, including high prescription drug prices, overuse of unneeded medical services, and repeated emergency room visits
  • Leveraging social determinants of health data to better care for communities
  • Understanding the structural barriers that prevent some Americans from accessing care at all

As a public benefit company dedicated to improving access, quality of care, and health equity for people enrolled in Medicaid, we believe that understanding the program’s past is crucial to charting its future. This book was developed as a free resource to empower stakeholders at all levels—from community health workers and primary care providers to policymakers—to make better decisions about the way we deliver care for Medicaid patients. We hope this book serves as a catalyst for positive change in Medicaid programs across the country.
